2-1-2003: New website article "Washington Outer Beltway". The Outer Beltway was first conceived in the 1950s and it was an active proposal until about 1980. Much of it would have been at about twice the radius of the Capital Beltway, although it would have been closer in near Rockville, passing just south of Rockville. It would have formed a complete circumferential freeway around Washington, D.C.

It was built as a 2-lane facility in 1952 and it was widened and reconstructed to 4 lanes, with construction spanning from August 1994 to August 1996.
