Route 288 Construction - September 2001 - Photos 1-4
Here's some photos of Route VA-288 under construction, taken in late September, 2001.
Above, continuously reinforced portland cement concrete pavement under construction just north of the Charter Colony Parkway overpass over VA-288 in Chesterfield County. Aggregate base course layer was placed on ground, then a grid of steel re-bar was placed, then the paving train places the concrete pavement. The two paving photos here were taken with a 135mm (2.7x) telephoto lens, making the highway's curves look sharper, but they are designed with a horizontal curvature that will allow 60 miles per hour vehicle travel.

Dump trucks carry loads of mixed wet concrete from a central-mix concrete plant, and each truck dumps its load in front of the tracked concrete spreader machine, then a tracked concrete finisher machine follows, then a final trim device follows. The finished product behind the paving train, is the 2-lane, 24-feet-wide, 9-inch thick concrete pavement. I took the two above photos on a Saturday when the paving train was stopped where it finished work on Friday, in other words, the paving work was not underway when I took the photos.
Above, looking north, standing where future roadway will be built, construction of VA-288 James River Bridge in distance. A deep cut will be excavated in the hill in the distance. North of the river is Goochland County, and south of the river is Powhatan County.
