Route 895 Construction - May 2002 - Photos 9-13

Here's 5 photos of Route 895 under construction, taken on May 8, 2002 while I was on an ASHE field trip to the whole Route 895 project.

Above, I'm standing on the eastbound approach span of the James River Bridge, looking west. The segment launching truss is visible on the right, and it is in the process of being dismantled since construction placing has been completed on the series of pre-cast post-tensioned reinforced concrete superstructure segments. Recchi America, Inc. is the bridge contractor that was hired by FD/MK LLC to build the James River Bridge, its elevated approaches, and the bridge portions of the I-95/Route 895 interchange ramps. The people in the white hardhats are the participants in the ASHE field trip.

Above, I'm standing on the eastbound span of the west approach span of the James River Bridge, from similar vantage point as previous photo, but looking east at the construction of the westbound bridge's sidespan of the main span which is being constructed by the cast-in-place balanced cantilever segmental construction method. As you can see, the remaining gap is fairly small. The blue steel structure is the form traveler used to cast each reinforced concrete 15-foot-long bridge segment. The pre-cast post-tensioned reinforced concrete superstructure section ends at the first pier ahead, and that is where the cast-in-place balanced cantilever segmental section will start.

Above, looking west, taken from the eastbound west approach span, looking at construction of the westbound west approach span. The curving ramp visible is Ramp G, which connects Route 895 westbound with I-95 southbound.

Above, I'm standing on the eastbound span of the west approach of the Route 895 James River Bridge, looking west. This portion of bridge deck is near completion, with a concrete overlay placed over the top of the series of pre-cast post-tensioned reinforced concrete superstructure segments, and the parapets have been constructed. The elevated ramp under construction is Ramp G, the ramp from westbound Route 895 to southbound I-95.

Above, Ramp E, which is the mostly elevated ramp from I-95 northbound to Route 895 eastbound. This is the approach to the ramp from I-95 northbound. This photo was taken out the window of the bus that was used for the ASHE field trip.
