Route 895 Construction - July 2001 - Photos 5-8
Here's more photos of Route 895 under construction, the first three were taken July 8, 2001.
Above, I'm standing on the Osborne Turnpike overpass bridge, looking west onto Route 895. Paving work is underway. The overpass bridge in the distance is Wilton Road, and the toll plaza construction can be seen just beyond that, and in the distance can be seen the fill under construction leading up to the Route 895 James River Bridge whose construction can be seen also. Unsuitable material on the westbound roadway was excavated, and aggregate base stone stabilization material is being placed over the area. Aggregate base course crushed stone has been placed on the eastbound roadway, with asphalt base courses placed on top of that.
The overpass bridge in the distance is Wilton Road, and it is about a month from completion. That will be a nice vantage point for photos of the toll plaza construction.
Above, I'm standing on the Osborne Turnpike overpass bridge, looking west onto Route 895. Photo was taken a few minutes after the previous photo. Aggregate base course is being placed on the westbound roadway, and three vehicles and one attachment are being used for the operation; a bulldozer with a "Jersey Spreader" spreader box attachment on the front is used to spread the aggregate base stone to a uniform depth, and the bulldozer pushes the dump truck ahead of it, as a workman gradually tilts the dump body at a higher and higher angle, distributing the stone into the spreader box until the whole dump truck load has been spread. Then another dump truck comes (you can see one already waiting on the median), and the process is repeated. A steel drum roller follows to compact the aggregate base stone.
Above, I'm standing on the Osborne Turnpike overpass bridge, looking east onto Route 895. Paving is underway. The overpass bridge in the distance is the Laburnum Avenue Connection. Aggregate base stone has been placed on the westbound roadway ahead, and a motorgrader can be seen doing fine grading. Aggregate base course crushed stone has been placed on the eastbound roadway, with asphalt base courses placed on top of that; and aggregate base course has been placed on the shoulders.
The last photo was taken July 15, 2001.
Above, I'm standing on the Osborne Turnpike overpass bridge, looking west onto Route 895 (same vantage point as the top photo, but taken a week later). Paving work is underway. The overpass bridge in the distance is Wilton Road, and the toll plaza construction can be seen just beyond that, and in the distance can be seen the fill under construction leading up to the Route 895 James River Bridge whose construction can be seen also. Aggregate base stone material has been placed on the westbound roadway, and asphalt base course paving can be seen at the lower right corner of the photo.
