Route 895 Construction - August 2001 - Photos 11-16
Here's more photos of Route 895 under construction, taken in early August, 2001.
Above, I'm standing on the Osborne Turnpike overpass bridge, looking west onto Route 895. Paving work is underway, with asphalt base courses placed. The overpass bridge in the distance is Wilton Road, and the toll plaza construction can be seen just beyond that, and in the distance can be seen the roadway leading up to the Route 895 James River Bridge whose construction can be seen also.
Above, I'm standing on the Osborne Turnpike overpass bridge, looking east onto Route 895. Paving is underway, with asphalt base courses placed. The overpass bridge in the distance is the Laburnum Avenue Connection. Aggregate base course crushed stone has been placed on the shoulders.
Above, I'm standing near VA-5, looking east onto Route 895. Heavy grading is complete in this cut section. Soil material was excavated, with stabilization material being placed over the area, with a layer of over 3 feet of heavy crushed stone about the grade of railroad ballast, with an aggregate base stone layer on top of that. Asphalt base courses will be placed next. More details of this "bathtub" are here - Route 895 Construction - July 2001 - Photos 1-4.
Above, I'm standing on the Willson Road overpass bridge over Route 895, looking west. Heavy grading is complete. Aggregate base course has been placed, and asphalt base courses have been placed in the distance. The Willson Road overpass bridge is complete but not yet open to traffic, as approach road construction is still underway.

Aggregate base course has been placed, and asphalt base courses have been placed in the distance. The Willson Road overpass bridge is complete but not yet open to traffic, as approach road construction is still underway. Willson Road traffic is being handled on a temporary detour roadway, and it can be seen crossing Route 895 ahead. When relocated Willson Road opens to traffic, the temporary roadway will be removed, and that short section of Route 895 will be graded and completed.
Above, I'm standing next to the temporary detour roadway of Willson Road that I mentioned in the previous photo, looking east down Route 895. The roadway cross-section can be seen, with the layer of aggregate base stone, and the three 3-inch asphalt base courses and a 2-inch asphalt intermediate course that have been placed on top of the aggregate base layer.
